I was the kid at the dinner table staring down the cold pile of peas. There was no way those were going in my mouth. I hated their sweet yet bitter taste and their green colour. I would rather go to bed early than eat those peas.
While I still hate peas, I have reformed my taste buds a lot over the last decade. The excuse that things are “yucky” just doesn’t work when you are an adult. My repertoire of accepted fruits and vegetables has vastly improved over the past few years.
Oddly enough, my favourite sandwich now consists of a vegetable I would have also given up play time for — eggplant. My mom never even attempted to get me to try this one, she knew the look that would come if she put a plate of it in front of me. I didn’t even like spaghetti with sauce when I was kid. Nope, it was buttered noodles with Parmesan (which I still occasionally enjoy, don’t judge) for this Plain Jane. Despite my mom’s Italian background, I was not a fan of the tomato or any of the sauces that came from it — with the exception of ketchup (I would put it on everything, and my daughter will too). Now, I cannot wait to make my eggplant Parm grilled cheese sandwich with garden fresh eggplant grown in our own backyard and homemade sauce with garden-fresh tomatoes.
I do not claim to be an expert on cooking. I am simply a recovering picky eater and plant killer who hopes to grow and raise lots of food on a small plot of land. When I first launched Picky to Plenty it quickly went from food blog to homesteading blog as my husband and I tried our hand at backyard farming.
Much has changed in the past two years. Our family grew from two (plus three dogs) to three. And we uprooted our lives and moved from a 2-acre homestead in the Niagara region to a one-acre country cabin in Grey County. While we still have our chickens and will continue to grow our own vegetables, homesteading is no longer a major part of our lives nor will it be a focus here at Picky to Plenty.
What you will find are the adventure of a recovering picky eater who is trying her best not to raise another picky eater. Many a meal has hit the floor in our kitchen but we keep trucking on. Follow along as this recovering eater tries to raise a plentiful eater.
